Faubourg Marigny Creole New Orleans Walking Tour
The word Creole as used in this tour means native born without reference to race. The descendants of Louisiana's  pioneers- French, Spanish, German, Irish, Italian, Africian, Caribbean who were born in Louisiana prior to the Louisiana Purchase.

What is Creole Style?

Explore New Orleans' most Creole neighborhood Faubourg Marigny, where the spirit of the Marquis Antoine Xavier Bernard Phillippe de Marigny de Mandeville still haunts this historic neighborhood which he established in1806.

The tour starts at Sun Oak, 2020 Rue Burgundy which is a a city landmark built in 1807 and remodeled in 1836. It is a Greek Revival galleried Creole cottage with a rusticated facade, dogtrot, and authentic period color scheme of French red, Creole putty, Amarillo yellow, Cuban blue. It is the home and studio of architect, Eugene Cizek, PhD./FAIA and artist/tour guide, Lloyd Sensat. It is one of the most authentically restored houses in the neighborhood and has been featured in numerous books,magazines and the TV series: K-Ville. Marvel at the interior of the house with its fine antiques reflecting  the grace and taste of Creole New Orleans a century ago. To the rear of the house is the spectacular "Sun Oak" and the Father Francis Xavier Seelos Memorial Gardens.

Depart from Sun Oak for a leisurely walking tour of the neighborhood. Learn to identify the various New Orleans architectural types and styles from Creole cottages, slave quarters to Victorian shotguns.See the Creole masterpieces of Jean Louis Dolliole,a free man of color, an entrepreneur, a builder/ architect. Hear about the life and times of Bernard de Marigny and the saga of the Creoles vs. the "Americains". Hear the tragic stories of the slaves and the inspiring free people of color (gens de couleur libres),noting that the white Creoles and the black Creoles lived side by side in Faubourg Marigny. Hightlights include: the bank robbed by Bonnie & Clyde, the location for Tennessse Williams' "A Streecar Named Desire", the first Catholic school for blacks in America, the legendary Marie Laveau's father and daughter's houses, former homes of Terry Flettrich first lady of New Orleans television, Arthur Q. Davis architect for the Superdome and the famous jazz haunts and restaurants of Frenchmen Street. Stroll through Washington Square on Dauphine St. originally "Great Men" because of the many prominent and famous people who lived there in the 19th century. The tour emphasizes history, art and architecture, landscape design and personal anecdotes of life in the neighborhood today.
